Every year over 20,000 kids "age out" of the foster care system on their 18th birthday. For all of them this means that they lose their placement in a foster home or group home. For many, this also means they lose state financial assistance and this scenario paves the way where too many become homeless, incarcerated or in a adult mental institution. The few that get into programs to ease the transition to instant adulthood often struggle without the structure and support of the foster care system.
Home Safe "graduates" a dozen or more kids to this environment annually and without a formal program in place the most we can provide is advice and referrals to other resources. Our Independent Living Program will be the logical next step for residents of our group homes who wish to continue to receive the support and services from the agency. The complex, located on our brand new 10-acre campus in West Palm Beach, will be a two-story structure with administration offices on the first level and three apartments that can house up to 9 clients ages 18-23 on the second floor. (See reverse page for floor plans) We expect these young adults to remain as residents for a few years, depending upon their individual circumstances.
The annualized operational costs for this program will be approximately $375,000 and include a Life Coach, a Program Manager and direct service staffing 24-hours a day.
